Double Period Project - Picture Update - 2

I told you that I had been busy inspite  of the holidays.  More pictures:

The muff completed, just needed to be stitched closed.

The muff is done, I used one of the stole's ties to make a muff strap.  It can easily be tucked inside the muff.

Next up, the hat. I made a wire frame to stretch the straw hat over and reshape.

First take, it's alright, but I am not in love.

I covered the straw in black felt to help even out the hat for the final application of the fashion fabric.

Here you can see the actual straw hat on the inside.  This hat required a lot of hand sewing.

Here, I have covered the crown of the hat on the outside, the inside  has been covered and stitched.

A lot of hand sewing, trust me.

One of the biggest challenges was to figure out how to construct the hat.  The order in which to do things, it really made a difference.

Since the hat is my interpretation of a 1912 toque hat. It is oversized and quite deep. I ran across a picture of the inside of a pith helmet with a false crown.  I added a false crown for the hat.

The bow, I placed the wire inside the seam allowance, so that  it would not be seen from the outside.
It worked.
The bow came out really well, but one bow wasn't enough. So, I had to make a second bow.

The finished hat, again, I am quite please with it.

The finished toque hat. I love it.

Double Period Project - Picture Updates

There won't be much text with this blog entry.  I wanted to update you all with some images of the work that I have completed over the last several weeks.

Here we go.

The lining for the jacket, I had to do this twice. I sorched the first set.

I used a modern pattern to obtain the upper curved portion of the jacket.

Brown fur option to be used as trim for the collar.  Jomar, once again. I purchased this a couple of years ago.

Second option.  these were fur stoles on sale at Jomar during the summer about three years ago for $9.99 per stole.  When I bought them in late summer that had been marked down yet again to 5.99, I bought everything that they had left.  The fake fur had a really nice feel to it and I thought it looked really natural unlike some fake fur that you see.

The collar, from the left, fashion fabric, interlining fabric, fashion fabric and the pattern.

Jacket is done!!!

The satin ties have been removed from the stoles.

Now, you have a picture of the jacket, new shirtwaist with black lace overlay and the new jabot.

This will be my fur large fur muff.  I combined two medium stoles to make one large muff.

A better picture of the jabot. I could have made the arm pieces a bit longer, next time.

I think that the jabot turned out really well, especially the collar.

To make the fur muff really full and plump, I stuffed it with cotton batting.

Double Period Project - Update

Sorry, I have not been able to update my blog as I should have.  As the holidays came and went, there was so much to accomplish. The competition comes to an end in just a couple of weeks. I still have some to do to complete both period costume outfits by the deadline.

I did not like the shirtwaist, well, I did like it, but it didn't go with the rest of the outfit, the linen was to heavy and it bunched around the waist. So, I quickly made another simple shirtwaist, without all of those wonderful tucks that took forever to do,  out of thin white fabric that I had on hand.  I overlayed the white with some black lace and  made a simple jabot to go with it.  It needed something down the front of the layered shirtwaist.  I am pleased with the jabot.  I saw a couple of images of jabots from this period and thought that I could use it.  So, I made one. I didn't have a pattern, I just winged it and it came out pretty well.  I used yet another of those fancy edged napkins that I cut up to make the trim around the collar of the pale yellow shirtwaist.

I was torn between brown fur and the black and white chinchilla fur.  I had lot more of the chinchilla so I went with that for the trim on the collar of the outer coat.  That's another reason that I changed the shirtwaist.

I finished the skirt and the outer jacket as well.  I have to hem the skirt and have finished hemming the jacket.
